The North
There, in the east part of the area lays Mývatn lake with geothermal activity bubbling around every footstep - between green, moss covered lava formations of Dimmuborgir and Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall of Europe, you truly experience the ever changing landscape of north Iceland.
It‘s not only the above ground that is gorgeous but the lava cave, Lofthellir, is a sight not the be missed.
In the cold Atlantic Ocean you can meet the whales - also called gentle giants of the sea- and Húsavík town is the place to see them. From Húsavík you will sail on a boat in search of these magnificent creatures that frequently enter the bay.
In the Vatnajökull National Park, the caldera Askja hides in the highlands. If you ever did dream of becoming an astronaut, this is the place to pretend to be one!
Traveling further to the west, following route one you get to Akureyri, the biggest town out of the capital area. This beautiful fjord possesses a hidden gem under the sea level. Strýtan, limestone chimneys sprouting hot water in to the ocean is a one of a kind phenomenon – for divers only though!
Connecting west and east is the Tröllaskagi peninsula, majestic mountain cluster cradling beautiful fjords on its outskirts. On the west coastline of Tröllaskagi is a little swimming pool with, hands down, the best view you can find in the country!
The people of Skagafjörður are known for their good sense of humor, great singing voices and horses! The Icelandic horse is the icon of this area so be prepared to see a lot of horses trotting around in all seasons.
